Candles and fresh flowers were what his mother had advised for dinner with Cienna. She’d also told him not to push, to let her come to him. But Keith wasn’t sure he was going to take that advice. After all, his mother had no idea how stubborn Cienna was.

She’d called twenty minutes ago to say that she was on her way and he was pacing the floor waiting for her. He was anxious to share his feelings with her and wondered how she would react. He was in love with her, there was no doubt in his mind. Cienna, on the other hand, would almost certainly doubt him. She’d probably get all flustered and recite all the reasons why a relationship between them couldn’t possibly work, but he’d planned his rebuttal. He’d simply give her all the reasons why it could work. He was determined to wear her down.

The phone and the doorbell rang simultaneously. Keith literally stood between them both wondering which one he should get first. He opted for the phone, figuring he didn’t want any interruptions once he was with Cienna.

Snatching the receiver he all but yelled, “Hello?” but he didn’t get an answer in return. It didn’t matter, Keith knew who it was. Tyra. She didn’t seem to understand that she was crossing the line to harassment by calling him at work and at home numerous times a day. And while he’d been trying to let the phase with her blow over, he was beginning to think he was going to have to do something to handle the situation once and for all.

“Did I interrupt something?” Cienna asked when he snatched the door open.

“Nah, just a crank caller. Come on in.”

Once she was in the apartment and Keith had closed the door behind her, she walked through the foyer and into the living room. It was obvious that she was checking his place out and Keith didn’t mind. He’d done the same at her apartment last night. Which was why he’d raced directly home after the depositions finished at three-thirty, so he’d have time to clean the place from top to bottom. He’d even cleaned his office and the tiny guest room even though he was certain she wouldn’t end up in either space.

“Nice place,” she commented when he came up behind her to take her coat.

“Nice dress,” he said while looking at her in the black material that wrapped alluringly around her body.

“Thanks,” she replied. “I wasn’t sure about being too casual or too dressy. And you said dinner at your place but then I didn’t know if you could really cook and thought we might actually go out.” She clamped her mouth shut suddenly and then said, “I’m babbling.”

He smiled and nodded. “A little. Nervous?”

She shook her head.

“Good, because there’s no need to be nervous. I can cook a really good baked ziti because in case I hadn’t already told you, Italian is my favorite food. We’re having that, tossed salad, fresh French bread and grated parmesan cheese.
